4d: real time? yes.

Posted in 4D on January 20, 2009 by designzoo

So after all the tests ive done, with photoshop and some limited flash mock ups of piecing my work together im looking to take the work to the next level.  Ive spoken to mike and weve talked about the pluses of making my project work real time instead of a pre made video piece or a mock up of a real time project.  So ive been looking into using a motion capture web cam piece, the aim would be to show the use of a space, so i imagine this as an installation piece.  The use of the space is based on its existance through its use.  So revealing areas of a room when there is movement is my main idea so far, how this will be visualised is not clear yet.

This is some of the web cam motion capture stuff ive been playign with.webcam motion capture work

we had to give a report upon our return from crimble, so here’s the little presentation i used to get across my progress

Wii Remote time…

So ive been working on the Wii Remote aspect of my project, for the wearable technology interface i feel the most obvious idea would be to control it using a Wii Remote.  It could be strapped to the arm, or taken apart and re cased into part of the wearable technology.

So the Bluetooth adapter has turned up, and ive been able to use the Wii Remote as the mouse.  So far this is just using the accelerometer, so to interact with the screen yu have to tilt the remote, may have to intergrate the A and B buttons into interacting with the movement so that general movment wont control the suit, for example as the persons walking the wii remote will make teh mouse go up and down as the person arm swings etc.

tilting the Wii remote up raises the mouse cursor, down lowers it, twisting right makes it go right n twisting it left makes it go left.

There were a few problems with getting it to connect, you have to make sure that when the laptop is searching for blue tooth devices that you’ve pressed the 1 and 2 buttons so the wii remote is discoverable, and make sure it stays that way by re pressing them.  Once the device is found you have to download the drivers to make sure it works fine.  This process has to be redone every time you want to connect the remote to your computer too.  The basics work well though, and GlovePie is really straight forward to use, it has hundreds of emulator scripts for different devices and many of these are Wii Remote ones.

The website i used to get GlovePie is here

Here’s the tutorial i used to set it up too here
